Overview
These artists posit the threshold not as a limit, but as a generative site: where transformation is possible and what was and what will be, can meet.
Featuring artists Alicia Radage, Benjamin Knock, Gonzalo Maggi, Ilaria Merola, Jonathan Roson, Mau Samayoa, Patrizia Ilaria Sechi, Sabrina Tirvengadum and Tobias Ross-Southall.
Passengers expands upon notions of liminal space that cross over into our interior lives. The arcades, tunnels, and passageways of the historic Devonshire Square Estate are reframed here as living symbols that mirror the complexities of the human condition: our desire to cross boundaries and borders, bridge between histories, identities, and interior states. From Alicia Radage’s field of human flora and Tobias Ross-Southall’s forms that hover between body and landscape, to Mau Samayoa’s memories translated into abstract bitmaps and Sabrina Tirvengadum’s exploration of migration, displacement and power. These artists posit the threshold not as a limit, but as a generative site: where transformation is possible and what was and what will be, can meet. Passengers examines the personal, geographical, material and temporal ways the artists articulate the gateways through which we journey, both physically and metaphysically. We are all entities in motion traversing architectures seen and unseen in the pursuit of connection and progression. Echoing Devonshire Squares communal culture, this exhibition brings you a cross continental conversation that transcends geographical borders, and into a space of access, connection and discovery, where space becomes porous and the before and the after cross over.
